Youth and elder garden growing in Muskogee

Legacy received a grant from the Tides Foundation to expand the garden program started in 2008. Garden director Don Blair leads the planting of a variety of vegetables and fruits with the help of Muscogee Indian Community and tribal youth. Mvskoke language learning is included, taught by mahaya, (teacher) John "Porky" Scott, Jr., a fluent speaker and elder. Artist and executive director, Dana Tiger, helps the young people create "garden art sticks" in colorful paint designs with garden words written in the Mvskoke and Cherokee languages that will be placed next to the plants for identification. "This is a fun colorful artistic way to learn the language while growing food." Dana says.
