Camp of My Dreams

We did a good thing this Memorial weekend. Over 50 people showed up, brought supplies, shared something of themselves.
I woke up the last morning of camp, Feeling blessed. My relative, Porky who had arrived the night before with his niece and great-niece, was across the hallway as it were, sleeping. As I lay in the floor of the large unfinished one room cabin I heard a horse neigh softly at the fence. I was the first up. All felt good and right. My little 8 year old cousin came sleepy eyed from the big boy tent where he had wanted to stay the night before. The big boys were still sleeping on ground between the tent and their fire. Little Jay came and sat with me under large trees before the sun came up. I told him how to say sun in creek. As hvsse rose, Wanda, Darrel and Stan were there by what was left of the fire that had been built by a young Cherokee person the first evening of camp. He had sang a blessing song the way he had been taught and walked round and round the fire as he spoke to us in cherokee about his life thus far.
Soon everyone was up visiting, grownups at the cooking fire and young people at theirs.
The breakfast of pancakes and sausage cooked on the coals tasted extra good while we listened to birdsong.
Award winning gourd artist, Verna Bates, her husband Fred and roy Hamilton, a writer and friend who came to help, arrived just when she said she would bringing gourds from her garden. Each young person made art appear from blank gourd canvases as Verna showed her love for her tools and what she does. All of us were amazed and excited. We took pictures and talked of having an art show.
Everybody mattered at legacy camp. It was close to perfect. We had lots of bugs, no running water and little sleep. But still it was magical. If you were not there we probably thought about you. If you were there Mvto.

Legacy Camp Personal Pack List
Essential Items:
• Tent, ground cloth
o If you do not have a tent, do not worry. We will share.
o If you have an extra tent to share, please bring it!
• Sleeping bag, pad or air mattress, pillow, additional ground cloth for inside the tent
• Personal items like tooth brush, paste, hair brush, soap, chapstick
• Towel, washcloth
• Personal medications
• Flashlight, extra batteries
• Sun screen and sun hat
• Bug repellant (preferably non-aerosol and without DEET)
• Bowl, plate, cup and silverware or mess kit
• Water bottle
• Small day pack, if you have one
• Clothing:
o Long pants and shorts
o Long-sleeved shirt
o T-shirts, short sleeved shirts
o Underwear
o Socks, comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots, preferably waterproof
o Sandals
o Jacket, sweater, sweatshirt or extra layers
o Rain jacket and pants or poncho
o Pajamas or comfortable sleeping clothes that you do not wear during the day
Additional Suggested Items:
• Bandana(s)
• Journal or notebook and pen
• Drawing paper, pencils, colored pencils
• Lawn chair or sit-upon pad
• Musical instrument
• Camera
• Binoculars
• A snack to share with everyone
• Simple games to share like a deck of cards
• Favorite book to read
• A favorite song or story to share
Things to consider:
 If you bring any snacks, please do not keep the food in your tent. Any food will attract insects and other wildlife into your tent so it is best to store snacks with the camp food or in your vehicle away from sleeping areas.
 If you are under 18 and staying by yourself at camp, you should make an adult aware of any medicine you may have with you or medicine you may need to take during the time at camp. Should you need any assistance, this adult can be helpful to you. There are several adults in camp who have medical knowledge and experience.
 If you need anything for your comfort and caring, do not worry. Talk to us and we will do what we can to make this a good experience for all concerned.

A few more things to add about Legacy camp. Gayle Ross will be joining us Friday evening, the 27th. She is an awesome Cherokee storyteller and we are so happy she will be there. We encourage attendees to bring musical instruments. We want to hear your talent!!
Here are directions. Head towards keys. We are off horseshoe bend road. So you turn onto horseshoe bend rd at the Phillips 66 store. Go 1 and 1/2 mile to Roy smith rd. Turn right. (Roy smith rd is at the end of a long white fence) we will be about 1/2 mile down that gravel road.on left. You will see our little

Legacy Camp, 10 Years!

Memorial weekend will be a milestone for our organization. For the 10th year, youth, artist mentors, and elders will gather at Legacy's Park Hill site to learn pottery, basket making, beading, eat traditional foods, talk some Muscogee and Cherokee as well as camp overnight for three days and two nights. Many of the participants have been coming for 10 years. Some will be camping for the first time. It's all about sharing cultural traditions and the arts while learning about nature and community.
It takes many to make camp a success. Our friend from Tennessee, Wanda Dewaard, travels every year to Oklahoma to teach a healthy respect for outdoor surroundings. From tracking to building shelter to getting up close with animal scat, Wanda shows her love of the natural enviornment in fun interactive ways that the kids can't resist.
We are also fortunate to have outstanding artist mentors lend their talents...such as award winning potter, Crystal Hanna. Crystal is bringing clay and tools for the kids to work with while providing her unique knowledge and skill. Cherokee treasure Betty Frog and her sister Barbara Keen will be making baskets and cooking kanuche. Deborah Johnson is donating beads and expertise in beadwork. Pam Iron, who is extremely busy as a candidate for Cherokee Tribal Council, is giving this years camp top priority, organizing food and site cleanup. She and her grandson Collin, a 10th grader at Sequoyah High School have camped every year. Language learning will be included as we welcome back our favorite Creek speaker, John "Porky" Scott, Jr. Traci Rabbit will be helping Friday and Verna Bates will instruct in "gourd art" on Sunday.

This is a special time for all, as we make memories , make art and honor our legacies.

Getting Ready For Legacy Camp

Exciting news. I've found out about using a fundraiser helper on facebook called Fundrazr. Our first online donation happened a bit ago so we are on our way to funding our annual camp! The money will go to fund the meals, turn on the water, pay a little honorarium to talented giving community artists and all else that goes into camping for three days and two nights with 30 youth. We welcome your help and we look forward to your support.

First Peoples Fund Community Spirit Award

January is over, but was plenty eventful! I was awarded the "Community Spirit Award" from First Peoples Fund, of Rapid City, South Dakota. This is an annual national award given to six Indigenous artists who share their inspiration, wisdom, knowledge and gifts with their communities. The award comes with a monetary prize to allow the artists to further practice their art. I am humbled and thankful to share the stage with artists who have kept cultural traditions alive to honor and remember where we come from so we may be strong where we go.

Legacy attended a powwow honoring Smoky Goompi, held on the last Saturday of the month. A generous donation from Don Stroud enabled us to give out prize money to young artists who made art that night. A big "wado" to Teri Rhoades for running the art corner (the kids loved her!) Head lady dancer Virna Williamson and her daughters made their family and all of us proud. It was a good place to be!

Happy New Year! Legacy went to the New Years Eve Sobriety Powwow in Tulsa where we had our booth for the youth "art style!". Tons of art was made, donations of cash were received and we gave out prize money to six talented winners (and a non winner) (another story...). What a wonderful time we had!
Soon I will be posting pics of our one day art and culture camp held during Thanksgiving weekend at the Legacy land in Park Hill. Forty people came out to participate and share cultural crafts, food and laughter. The only thing missing was our camp leaders from Tennessee, Wanda and Case DeWaard. They will be back in May for camp on Memorial Day weekend.
We look forward to coming together in this new year to carry on our traditional teachings and to celebrate the creativity within our Cherokee and Mvskoke people.

Legacy Youth and Performance day

Over 60 area young people participated in impromptu stage performance and art creation. Sapulpa Public Schools brought original artwork and came away the winners of the day with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place cash awards. Musical talent from Norman and Stillwater was represented. Parents, friends and relatives brought food (fry bread, beans and homemade fries) that was shared and enjoyed by all. The kids took the stage taking turns at MC and song debuts.

We were honored when Cherokee Hughes, a junior at Sequoyah High, brought artwork by her boyfriend, Derrick Deere, who lost his life in a vehicle wreck a week after his graduation. Derrick was a fine artist. His talent will be remembered.

Legacy Cultural Learning Community, Inc. will host the 2nd Annual Memorial Day Youth Arts and Performances at Tiger Gallery, Monday May 31st. Area tribal youth are invited to share their talents in drawing, painting, sculpture, spoken word, music, song, dance and more for a chance to win cash awards. Bring a lawn chair and stay all day. Arts and crafts as well as food concession are included. A featured performance at 4:00 by Mvskoke rocker Nokose “Blue Fire” Foley. Concession and arts and crafts start at 10:30. Youth and elder garden growing in Muskogee

Legacy received a grant from the Tides Foundation to expand the garden program started in 2008. Garden director Don Blair leads the planting of a variety of vegetables and fruits with the help of Muscogee Indian Community and tribal youth. Mvskoke language learning is included,taught by mahaya, (teacher) John "Porky" Scott, Jr., a fluent speaker and elder. Artist and executive director, Dana Tiger, helps the young people create "garden art sticks" in colorful paint designs with garden words written in the Mvskoke and Cherokee languages that will be placed next to the plants for identification. "This is a fun colorful artistic way to learn the language while growing food." Dana says.

Roxanne Harmon, senior at Sequoyah High School, recently won two first place awards at the Tulsa Indian Arts Festival, with a colored pencil work and a Cherokee basket. She was also awarded a 500 dollar scholarship to pursue her education. We wish to congratulate this hardworking teen who represents what "honoring our legacy" is all about!

Grant for art building completion

Cherokee Nation gave just over 8,000 dollars for materials needed to ready the Park Hill, Legacy Art Center, for use. Beginning in February the Legacy community will start hammering, putting up insulation and installing appliances to prepare the building for classes in art and cultural learning. Legacy Camp 2009

Over 40 community members came out to the Park Hill Legacy site to camp the first weekend in October. Weather was great, food was terrific, (thanks to our fabulous friend Pam Iron) teaching of crafts by adults and youth alike was the best! We could tell because no one wanted to leave on Sunday...even though it started raining!

Getting Back to the Art

Dana Tiger is heading back to the art table. She will be painting never before seen images in hopes of many sales at her next show, Red Earth.
My time has been devoted to producing the first annual Legacy Youth Festival in the month of May. My passion is my Legacy organization, however my economic situation calls out for me to stir my creative forces to action. I can do this!
I'm striving for health, clarity and momentum as I approach the place where I paint.

It's exciting to have our first annual Legacy Youth Festival coming up in two days. We will welcome talented people from several area tribes who will share their knowledge with young people in attendance as well as a guest from an Alaska tribe, Morgan Fawcett,to play a flute concert.
Some of programs as taught by sharing Legacy Community members are...Muscogee citizens, Stacy Pratt, creative writing instruction;
Mike Berryhill, ways of the Mvskoke past; Sam Proctor, Stomp Dance and blessing; John Scott Jr. traditional foods and Mvskoke language.
The day will be filled with contributions by a host of giving people from our area working together to make this a successful day filled with ways to celebrate young people and their talents.
The Legacy kids will demonstrate basketmaking, sculpture, drawing, singing, flute playing, heavy metal drum concert, poetry reading and comedy.
If you are young come share your talents with us. If you are old come sit back and enjoy. If you are in between come help us do all the work.
